Bleak new year in store as ARGO plans to close Doncaster McCormick plantJUST before Christmas, ARGO, the parent group of McCormick Tractors International Ltd, announced proposals to switch production of the entire McCormick tractor range to its Italian plants and close the Doncaster facility by the end of this year with the loss of 350 jobs. Only sales, marketing and service parts operations will remain in the UK.
Despite the development of the Doncaster product lines that were acquired by ARGO in January 2001 and the addition of new ones, including those for the award-winning highhorsepower XTX and ZTX models, the UK plant has suffered what ARGO calls ‘a challenging financial period’.
Even though McCormick became the fourth best-selling tractor brand in Britain in 2004, Alberto Negri, general manager of McCormick Tractors International, said the general outlook for 2007 and beyond showed no sign of significant improvement. “It is important for McCormick to structure its business accordingly to ensure that the McCormick name continues to perform and grow in the global marketplace,” he said.
The proposals, that have been put to the Doncaster plant’s trade unions and other employee representatives for consultation, call for all the UK assembly operations and ‘major support functions’ to be transferred to Italy, where a number of McCormickbranded tractors are already produced alongside those bearing the Landini and Valpadana names. 350 EMPLEADOS A LA *** CALLE

McCormick tractors to close Doncaster plant after 60 years
Machinery - FG | 22 December, 2006 By Mervyn Bailey
AFTER recently celebrating 60 years of production the McCormick tractor facility at Doncaster is set to close.
Parent company the ARGO Group plans to move production of tractors to its Italian manufacturing plants.
The proposals will affect 350 jobs and will see the closure of the Wheatley Hall Road facility by the end of 2007. As far as McCormick in the UK is concerned this will become a sales, marketing and distribution branch similar to subsidiaries in other countries. A service and parts operation will remain in the UK.
